These twins are often overlooked.

Sometimes you hear them in your favorite podcasts and sometimes you don't hear them at all.

Let Me Ask You

Ever wonder why some speakers put you to sleep, while others grab your attention and you find yourself hanging onto their every word?

That's often the magic of pausing and pacing at work.

Pause and pace are the twins of verbal charisma.

When you pause you give your listeners a chance to digest what you're saying and internalize the information they just received.

Pace is often a struggle between two extremes: slow and fast.

If you speak too slow, then it becomes dull and monotone. If you speak too fast, then becomes abrasive and limits your ability to enunciate.

The sweet spot is a few clicks above too slow to relax the audience and a few clicks below too fast to have them sit up in their seats.

Actionable Tip

Before your next talk, webinar, podcast, or even an enrollment conversation, practice pausing for three seconds at key moments and varying your speed to emphasize important points.

Here's a framework to help:

PACE Technique:

Pause - After making a key point or asking a rhetorical question.

Accelerate - When sharing a list or less critical details.

Control - Maintain consistent control but flexible speed for general information.

Emphasize - Slow down for the essential pieces of information you want your audience to remember.
